memorial. It helps us remember General San Martin. He was the most important freedom fighter in
Argentina's history and is as important to them as George Washington is to Americans. We took a tour of the city and saw Florida Street, a street for walking only which is filled with shops, Colon Theater, May Square, the
Government House, La Boca (the oldest and poorest part of the city, which is where the tango was started) and a beautiful cathedral.

On June 13, we went to a small city called San Luis, where we saw the National University of San Luis, the Congress Building, and the Government House. We also took a tour outside the city and saw Florida Lake, El Tepiche and the Rio Grande River. We also went to La Carolina, a gold mining city. We actually got to go into the mine with our own boots and a flashlight.  The mine is no longer worked as a mine. It was closed in 1905 after 70 people died in an
accident.

On June 15 we went to Mendoza. We took a city tour and saw
Independence Square, Chile Square, Spain Square, Spain Square, San Martin Square and Italy Square. We also saw a freedom monument, Ave Maria Church, Jose de San Martin Park, and La Cabana Chocolate Factory. The Freedom Monument is made from 16 tons of bronze and was made by a Uruguayan sculptor named Juan Ferrari. San Martin Park is huge and contains an artificial lake, a band shell, the largest zoo in South America and a replica of a
Mississippi steamboat. At the chocolate factory we saw the machines used to make chocolate and we tried the
chocolate, a lot of it!

From Mendoza we went to Alta Montana, the High Mountains. We actually went into the Andes. We saw colorful rock,  panoramic scenery, and we had plenty of sun. We took a ski lift up to the top of the mountain, saw a huge hot spring, had snowball fights, saw the Aconcogua Mountain (the highest in the Andes) and went to the Chilean border. It was the best tour of all!

On June 17, we went back to Buenos Aires. That night, we had asado beef and saw a tango show. It was great.
I found out that tango always complains. It was developed by the poor and the poor always complained. The footwork in tango is amazing. The next day we went shopping, bought six bottles of wine and left for home. On the way home our flight was cancelled and we had lots of trouble getting another flight so we could still get our connecting flight to Minneapolis / St. Paul. We finally got one and reached home safely on June 19.

It was a great tour of America Del Sur!
