Bassai-dai is one of the most popular kata among various branches of
karate. Sakagami Ryushu of Itosukai cites to 5 different varieties in his book: Itosu, Matsumura, Tomari, Oyadomari, and Ishimine. Sawabe Shigeru Sensei, on the other hand, identifies 13 main variants in his book on Bassai kata.
