This year marked the first time Demura Shihan has held an only -  Batto-Do tournament.
Our special guest from Japan was Master Kazuhiko Hosaka (Gunma, Japan). Master Hosaka was also our Chief Referee and main seminar instructor. Approximately 50 people participated in 3 group seminar categories:

  • beginners (run by Jerry Short)
  • intermediate (run by Jim Eyre)
  • advanced (run by Master Hosaka).

Sensei Demura presented general information on the sword and on the rules, history and manners of Batto-Do.

The event was held on April 17, 2004. The seminars ran from 9:30 am-12 noon and the tournament began at 12:15 pm. Most of the participants were adults members who are training in Toyama-Ryu Batto-Do. The kata competition focused on the eight kata which form the core of the Toyama Ryu syllabus. The tournament also featured competition in tameshegeri - in which the contestant tests sword technique by cutting a target. Beginner's were required to make only 2 cuts, both
"Kesa-giri - downward cuts at an angle of 45
degrees. Black belts were required to make 5 cuts, or Godan Geri.
