MINNESOTA TWINS MOVE TO CALIFORNIA

No, this is not about the latest juggling in Major League Baseball - those Minnesota Twins are still housed in
Minneapolis for at least one more season. Seth Johnson and Adam Johnson, on the other hand, have moved from Minnesota to California to continue their educations as well as continue training in Karate-Do. Seth and Adam began studying karate at the age of 9 in Winona, Minnesota. Talented athletes, they both played other sports - soccer,
baseball, and basketball - but karate "is the activity we always stuck with" says Adam. The twins received their red belts at age 15, and soon began training as adults. They made their first visit to the Honbu Dojo in 2000, when Seth won the 14-17 black belt division at the OCC tournament. Adam finished 3rd in the same division. The next year they moved into the men's brown belt division, where they found the competitors "bigger, stronger, and more experienced" Seth recalls. Both lost in the early rounds. The following year, however, Seth took 1st in brown belt kumite, while Adam finished 3rd in brown belt kata. The twins received their shodan-ho belts from Demura Sensei in July, 2002. In August they set out for California. For the first six months they lived in the Dojo and trained daily. Their father, Dana, is an executive with Winona-based Fastenal Corporation and helped them arrange jobs with Fastenal in Orange County.  "The dynamics of training every day with Demura Sensei and all of the other instructors at the Santa Ana Dojo was extraordinary," Adam says. "Each instructor brought a slightly different approach, and the overall result was awesome!" Living and training at the Dojo was slightly intimidating at first. "Everyone was friendly and helped make us feel comfortable, though, and that made the move so much easier" Seth recalls. "Now, I feel at home--I've learned that I am smart enough to ask stupid questions!"  If Adam's win in the black belt division this year is any evidence, the twins have fit in quite nicely! Seth and Adam both plan to attend Cal State Fullerton next year and study business. You can be sure you will be seeing a lot of them in the Dojo, as well.
